Retirees (Pet Only)
These are some of the retired breeders in the Volcano View herd. While many of our retirees are adopted to new homes, these individuals are particularly special to us and will remain in our care as spoiled pets for as long as they live. Their lines and genes are perpetuated in our breeding program through their offspring.
Zombie
|
KTW Zombie Apocalypse VVH DOB: 4/1/2012 Sire: KTW Hebe Dam: KTW Violet Color: Gray Pattern: Pinto Markings: Split Face Zombie's name comes from her half-and-half mask. She's a sweetheart who loves ice cubes and running on her wheel, and she's an expert cricket hunter. She and her "sister" Anubis are closely bonded. Zombie has been retired from breeding is residing here permanently as a beloved pet, with her daughter Anarchy to continue her bloodline. |
Delilah |
VVH Delilah Darling DOB: 8/1/2012 Sire: NPH Oleander KTW/VVH Dam: KTW Plumeria VVH Color: Unknown Pattern: Albino Markings: Snowflake ("hidden") Delilah ("Bean") is from the first litter bred here at VVH. We couldn't resist her - she's lovely and also a complete sweetie. Her excellent temperament makes her a great "ambassador", and we're so excited to have an albino in our herd! As a mother we couldn't ask for more - she's gentle, and lets us handle her babies earlier than most other mothers. |

She loves cuddling and is always calm no matter what, which makes her a great "ambassador" hedgehog. She's an excellent mother and is willing to foster babies as well. |

KTW Anubis VVH DOB: 4/1/2012 Sire: KTW Datura VVH Dam: KTW Passion Flower Color: Gray Pattern: Pinto Markings: Pinto Face, Eyeliner, Mismatched Ears Anubis ("Newbie") got her name because it looks like she's wearing Egyptian eye makeup. She's adventurous and she has an amazing temperament. She never raises her quills and is comfortable in all different situations, so she's a perfect "ambassador" for VVH. She's also a very attentive, devoted mother. |
In Memoriam
These hedgehogs are no longer with us. Whether or not they were part of our breeding program, they were our beloved pets first and foremost. We remember them with fondness and steadfast love.
Serenity |
SPB Serenity VVH DOB: July 2011 (approx) Color: Chocolate Russet Pattern: Pinto (minimal) Markings: Cheek Patches Serenity ("Wren") was a gorgeous russet color - my lookalike "redhead" girl. She was exceptionally calm in any situation, and one of our hedgehog ambassadors. She had a perpetually smiley personality and loved to be held and cuddled. She was named after a spaceship. Her death came on suddenly, most likely from miscarriage complications. She died a little after 5am on April 19th, in my arms, after cuddling and speaking to her all night. Her origins were somewhat ambiguous, but we gave her the best life we could, and she is bitterly missed. We were lucky to be able to keep her daughter, Siren, to continue her line. This is a favorite photo of her, taken a few weeks before her death. |
Napoleon |
AKH Napoleon BLH/VVH DOB: 3/7/2011 Sire: AKH Cosmo AKH Dam: AKH Bumbleberry Color: Dark Gray Russet Pattern: Solid Markings: Badger Stripes, Cheek Patches Napoleon was the shining sun at the center of our breeding herd. He was an exceptional stud who loved the ladies and consistently produced very dark, badger striped babies, as well as surprising us with some oddities. His stunning coppery red color is something we are striving to reproduce. He was a spaz, a charmer, a fighter, a derpus, and a lover-boy. His star burned hot and bright, and went out in a blaze of glory. He is irreplaceable, both in our breeding program and our hearts, but we are fortunate to have seven daughters and one son to continue his legacy - including his last daughter, Napoleon, who was named in his honor as we were saying goodbye. |
Jekyll |
BLH Jekyll (aka Juice Box) VVH
DOB: 2/11/2013 Sire: AKH Piceous BLH Dam: BLH Olive Oil Color: Black Pattern: Reverse Pinto (ruby eyed) Markings: None Jekyll ("Juice Box") was exceptional in every way, not only a huge asset to our breeding program, but also a beloved pet - one of our special girls, and a perfect ambassador hog. We adored our sweet reverse pinto girl since the moment we met her, when she was tucked into her crochet "monster", and knew she would remain with us her entire life. She was spunky, adventurous, playful, and a complete cuddlebug. She loved her wheel, her fabric tunnel, bacon crumbs, playing tug-of-war with denim, and any kind of toy. She would ride around in the sleeve or pocket of my hoodie, sprawl in my lap, and snuggle against my neck. She was also an excellent mother - her babies were always very dark, and they always inherited her wonderful temperament. She passed away unexpectedly and much too soon, but we are fortunate to have her daughter, Zen, and her son, Hemingway, to continue her line. This is one of our favorite photos of her, asleep in Nick's lap, only a few days after she first came to us. |
V |
VVH Violet DOB: 3/23/2014 Sire: VVH Nero Dam: VVH Verity Color: Black Pattern: White Markings: Badger Stripes V was the perfect look-alike daughter of Verity, and one of our best ambassadors. She was a "grapefruit", perfectly round, which is where her name came from - a Willy Wonka reference. ("Violet, you're turning violet!") She was an unconditional sweetheart, a starlet in our herd, and a precious member of our family. She loved belly rubs, nap cuddles, and any sort of new adventure (most notably a visit to the Seattle Museum of Flight). She lived with Napoleon, who she was closely bonded with, and they loved romping in the playpen, eating, and trying to out-derp each other. V would have been a great mother, too, but she never got a chance. We always knew she would stay with us her entire life; we just never thought it would be so short. |
Zen |
VVH Zen DOB: 1/22/2014 Sire: AKH Napoleon BLH/VVH Dam: BLH Jekyll (Juice Box) VVH Color: Black Pattern: Solid (Facial Pinto) Markings: Split Face, Eyeliner, Single Badger Stripe, Single Eye Stripe, Mismatched Ears Zen was born here, to two of our most exceptional hedgehogs, and she was exquisite even as a baby. In particular, her dark split face with a single badger stripe set her apart from any baby we had ever seen, but it was her spunk and her unconditionally sweet, happy personality that we fell in love with, and have adored ever since. When her mother, Jekyll (Juice Box), unexpectedly died, Zen was my only consolation, and she helped to fill the hole that JJB left in our breeding herd and our family. She was special to us not just as a continuation of her parents, but also carved out her own niche in our lives that set her apart and kept us always in her thrall. She was half of one of our bonded pairs of females, having lived with our "unicorn", Amalthea, since they were both just-weaned babies, and we jokingly referred to them as "the doges" for their puppy-like antics and tendency to beg for food at their bowl. Her striking appearance, and our unending affection, earned her a place of honor on our business cards, Facebook page cover photo, and the front page of our website. |
Archimedes |
KTW Archimedes VVH
DOB: 11/25/2011 Sire: KTW Kukui Wingnut Dam: BBH Chili Pepper NPH/KTW Color: Gray Pattern: High Snowflake Markings: Badger Stripes, Cheek Patches Archimedes, sometimes called Ares, single-handedly sparked a wildfire passion that inspired our breeding program and completely redirected the path of our lives. Everything that we have achieved started with him - little mister "red dot", a dark, crinkle-faced photo on a breeder's website when he was three weeks old. He wasn't an easy hedgehog, especially in the beginning, but he was ours, and every way that he challenged us also taught us and pushed us forward. He gave us thick skins and level heads that have served us well with every hedgehog we've ever had since. The relationship with him helped turned us from timid new owners into confident, insightful breeders, and until today, he has always been there. He was our "only child" for a while, a constant companion, giving us more inside jokes and subtle memories than any other individual hedgehog we've had. He was never the sweetest, always a little disgruntled even on his best days, nor was he perfect from a breeding standpoint - but he was the first, the one who started it all. No hedgehog will ever be what he was, or affect our lives in such an irrevocable way. As breeders, wherever we go and whatever we do, it will be because of and in tribute to him. |
