All of the following dry cat foods are recommended for hedgehogs. This is not a complete list - it is intended to simplify the process of selecting a food, by compiling the important information for the majority of available and appropriate food options (in the US/Canada). It includes the foods that are most commonly used and easy to find, as well as others that are less well known. Some of these foods are available at chain pet stores (PetCo, Petsmart), while some are only sold at private/local pet and farm supply stores.
This list is kept regularly updated! However, each brand may change various details about product recipes and lines without notice, and this list cannot be expected to be completely 100% accurate at any given moment. It should be used as a point of reference and compared against the current in-hand product labels for purposes of verification.
"Top Tier Foods" are those foods that are considered among the best options for hedgehogs. They are appropriate to use as a single food, or in a mix. This is based on quality of ingredients, the nutritional values, as well as our personal experience and that of other hedgehog breeders and owners.
"Second Tier Foods" are those foods that are considered acceptable for hedgehogs. They are "fairly good" or "decent" in quality overall, but not ideal. This may be determined by lower (but not terrible) quality of the ingredients, the fat and/or protein being slightly "off", or the experience of breeders or owners that have used these foods. They should be used in a mix with other food(s) in order to achieve a balanced diet that is both high quality and falls within the correct fat and protein ranges.
